What are teenagers reading?
Parents say: all teenagers do is watch TV, listen to terrible pop music & complain about school.
Well, parents are right to some extent. Our questionnaire shows that teenagers are spending on average 80% of their free time listening to music or watching TV. But the questionnaire also shows that 72% of teenagers are reading for pleasure every week.
Parents say: teenagers don't read any more!
Again, parents are right to some extent. Children don't buy many books after they reach the age of 11. After that, children spend a lot on videos, cassettes & posters. They don't spend very much on books.
But the questionnaire shows that teenagers are reading a lot of magazines! In fact, 40% of children from 13 to 19 spend money on comics & magazines.
Parents say: teenagers only read rubbish!
Parents are probably not completely right. According to our questionnaire, teenagers are buying a variety of magazines, many of them health & fitness, the environment & popular science. They are also becoming more critical of comics & teen magazines. They feel they are growing out of this kind of reading.
But they say that they don't have time to read long novels. They can't get interested in them. & yes, they prefer videos, films & going out!

Asian food

From a visit to three Asian countries, one thing is clear: the Asian diet is now more westernized. The traditional Asian food-eaten three times a day-is rice. But now there are also meals of wheat products, such as toast for breakfast & milk products.
Asian supermarkets now have a long list of Western foods such as breads, cakes & biscuits, snack foods, tinned goods & fizzy soft-drinks, pasta (wheat noodles), breakfast cereals, butter, cheese, lamb & beef.
But most striking is the large number of milk products. Milk products traditionally aren't part of an Asian diet-many Asians actually allergic to milk. But there are now ads on TV for milk, according to the ads, is 'modern', middle class & healthy. At a supermarket in Ampang Park, Kuala Lumpur, there is a shelf, four meter long, for milk in tins.
In one Bangkok supermarket there are more than a dozen different brands of milk drinks, from strawberry to pineapple flavour. In a typical supermarket in Chiang Mai in northern Thailand (population 1.2 million), there is fresh milk & flavoured long-life milk in mini cartons. There are also fruit yoghurts in pineapple, orange & lychee flavours.Unfortunately, there are now more Western diet-related diseases.

That's one Hard Worker!

1 Bob Smith, my assistant programmer, can always be found2 hard at work at his desk. He works independently, without3 wasting company time talking to colleagues. Bob never4 thinks twice about assisting fellow employees, and always5 finishes given assignments on time. Often he takes extended6 measures to complete his work, sometimes skipping coffee7 breaks. Bob is a dedicated individual who has absolutely no8 vanity in spite of his high accomplishments and profound9 knowledge in his field. I firmly believe that Bob can be10 classed as an asset employee, the type which cannot be11 dispensed with. Consequently, I duly recommend that Bob be12 promoted to executive management, and a proposal will be13 executed as soon as possible.Addendum:That idiot was standing over my shoulder while I wrote the report sent to you earlier today. Kindly re-read only the odd numbered lines.

The Internet

Its history
The Internet started in the 1960s. The United States Department of Defense started it because they wanted a computer network to help the American military. In the 1970s, scientists worked on it. Then in the 1980s, telephone companies made it possible to communicate on the computer network in many more countries. An international computer language was born & the Net went worldwide.
What can it do?

Yesterday was Mary Alston's birthday. She is 109 years old, she is the oldest person in the world. And she only eats junk food.
Mrs. Alston had a party with 6 generations of her family. Her daughter, Jenny Morgan, who is 85, said, "My mother loves chocolate, and eats only popcorn, pizzas, and Burgers.
She never eats fresh food. She says she doesn't like it."
Mrs. Alston lives in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. She was born on a farm in Pennsylvania, and worked as a teacher. In 1915 she married James Henry Alston. He died in 1983.
Her granddaughter, Annie who is 65, said, "Grandma gets up everyday at 6 o'clock, and goes to the hairdresser every Friday."
Annie asked her grandmother what she wanted to eat on her birthday. Mary said, "I'd like a cheeseburger and fries!"
